The Anchorage School District (ASD) and the Anchorage Education Association (AEA) have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract that covers approximately 2,800 educators. The proposed contract is set to begin on July 1, 2026 and continue until the end of June 30, 2029. This announcement was made through a joint statement released by the ASD.
The agreement aims to improve compensation and working conditions for educators. According to the statement, it includes salary increases and enhanced employer health contributions. Additionally, the contract addresses more than 20 language articles designed to improve the working environment for teachers within the district.
As part of the agreement, there is a provision for a temporary extension of the previous contract, which expired on June 30, 2026. This extension will bridge the gap until the new three-year contract takes effect.
“This contract is historic for Anchorage educators,” said Christi Sitz, President of the AEA. She emphasized that competitive wages and benefits are crucial for retaining current teachers and attracting new talent. Sitz underscored the commitment of both the AEA and ASD to ensure that students receive the best education possible.
Dr. Jharrett Bryantt, Superintendent of ASD, acknowledged the challenges faced during negotiations amid rising costs and budget pressures. He stated, “Our teachers are the heart of this district, and student success begins in their classrooms.” The focus during negotiations remained steadfast on providing educators with the necessary resources to support student achievement.
A ratification vote by AEA members is anticipated later this month. Should the members approve the agreement, it will then be presented to the Anchorage School Board for consideration in early February.
The agreement has been met with optimism from both sides, reflecting a mutual understanding of the importance of supporting educators for the benefit of students in the Anchorage community. The final approval process will determine the contract’s implementation and its potential impact on the educational landscape in the district.
