In a press conference on Thursday, Governor Rhoden voiced strong support for two significant legislative proposals, asserting they represent the largest tax cut in South Dakota’s history. The bills, Senate Bill 96 and Senate Bill 245, aim to provide substantial relief to homeowners by modifying property taxes across the state.
Details of the Proposed Tax Cuts
Senate Bill 96 permits counties to introduce a half-percent sales tax specifically designed to offset property tax reductions for owner-occupied residences. Meanwhile, Senate Bill 245 establishes a homeowner property tax reduction fund, intended to facilitate ongoing tax relief for residents. Rhoden highlighted the collaborative efforts among legislators, noting that a comprehensive approach resulted in a mix of targeted and statewide relief measures.
“That package includes targeted and statewide relief. It includes both short-term and long-term relief, and it adds greater predictability and transparency to our property tax system,” Rhoden stated. He revealed that discussions had encompassed as many as 60 to 70 different proposals aimed at tackling the property tax issue, expressing satisfaction with the outcome of these deliberations.
Comments on National Defense and the Iran Conflict
In addition to tax discussions, Governor Rhoden addressed the ongoing conflict in Iran, expressing his support for actions taken by President Trump. He pointed out South Dakota’s role in recent military operations, specifically referencing the deployment of B-1 bombers from Ellsworth Air Force Base, which conducted airstrikes targeting key installations in Iran. According to US Central Command, the mission significantly degraded Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities.
Reflecting on these developments, Rhoden reiterated comments from his State of the State address, where he suggested that national defense could evolve into a key economic driver for South Dakota. “I think this was a demonstration and another example of the nation looking to South Dakota for help and support,” he remarked. “We have so many resources that lend to building a case for national defense being a huge part of our economy in South Dakota.”
As reported by Fox News, the B-1 bombers completed a 34-hour nonstop mission, carrying an impressive 75,000 pounds of munitions. This operation underscores not only the state’s military capabilities but also its strategic importance on a national scale.
The combination of these tax initiatives and military engagements marks a significant moment for South Dakota as it navigates both economic and international challenges. Governor Rhoden’s leadership in these areas reflects a commitment to addressing local needs while also emphasizing the state’s role in broader national matters.
