URGENT UPDATE: Western New York is gearing up for a significantly improved winter road maintenance season as salt supplies are expected to stabilize following last year’s severe shortages. Motorists will likely find streets better equipped for safe travel amid the expected snowfall, thanks to proactive measures taken by local authorities.
Last winter, the region faced a devastating rock salt shortage, primarily attributed to “historic demand” spurred by relentless freezing temperatures. The American Rock Salt mine in Livingston County, the largest operating salt mine in the United States, struggled to meet local needs, causing delays in deliveries that left many roads inadequately treated.
Officials are optimistic about this winter’s salt supply. Erie County DPW Commissioner Bill Geary explained that local governments will have better access to salt this year, alleviating concerns from last season. “We have taken steps to ensure that our municipalities will have the necessary resources to keep roads safe and clear,” Geary stated.
In Clarence, James A. Dussing, the town’s highway superintendent, reported that their salt barn on Goodrich Road is fully stocked, providing confidence for the community. “We are ready for whatever winter throws at us,” Dussing emphasized, highlighting the importance of being prepared for snow and ice events.
As winter approaches, local governments are prioritizing public safety, ensuring that road crews are equipped to handle adverse weather conditions. The 2023 winter season is set to begin soon, and with it, the expectation for improved road conditions across the region.
Residents are urged to stay informed about weather forecasts and road conditions as the winter months progress. With these preparations in place, Western New York is poised to tackle the challenges of winter travel head-on.
