UPDATE: Buford’s bar in Austin, Texas, is set to reopen its doors just days after a devastating mass shooting that claimed three lives and injured 18 others. The bar will welcome patrons back on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 6 PM, with heightened security measures in place.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Buford’s management confirmed the reopening while highlighting their commitment to support the victims and their families. The bar will donate 100% of sales from Friday through Sunday to those affected by the tragic events that unfolded early on March 1.
The shooting occurred around 2 AM when a gunman opened fire from a black Cadillac SUV, targeting individuals outside the bar on West Sixth Street. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that officers arrived at the scene within 57 seconds of the first 911 call, providing immediate aid to the victims.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, as the suspect, armed with a semi-automatic pistol and later an AR-15-style rifle, fired indiscriminately at pedestrians. Tragically, two victims, 21-year-old Savitha Shan and 19-year-old Ryder Harrington, succumbed to their injuries shortly after the attack. A third victim, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, died in the hospital on March 2. Authorities confirmed that two individuals remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
To ensure safety upon reopening, there will be an increased police presence at Sixth and Rio Grande streets. Additionally, Rio Grande will be closed to through traffic from 10 PM to 4 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. The bar also plans to install protective glass around the beer garden area, where the gunfire originated.
Buford’s management emphasized the importance of returning to normalcy for their staff, with 40 of 41 team members expressing readiness to return to work. The message conveyed a sense of unity and resilience, stating, “For many, Buford’s is more than a workplace; it’s their primary source of income and a place where they feel supported.”
