Mikel Arteta Discusses Saka’s Impact and Arsenal’s Injury Woes After Fulham Victory

Following Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium, manager Mikel Arteta faced the media to discuss key moments from the match, including Bukayo Saka’s decisive performance and the team’s ongoing injury challenges. Arteta provided insights into Saka’s return, the status of Gabriel’s injury, and the resilience of the squad amidst adversity.

The match saw Saka score the winning goal, marking a significant moment in his comeback. Arteta emphasized the emotional and physical journey Saka has undergone, highlighting his gratitude towards the medical staff who facilitated his return. “I think it’s a beautiful moment to see how much our people love, respect and admire Bukayo,” Arteta stated. “He lifted the stadium, the energy, and it’s great to have him back.”

Injury Concerns Loom Large

Despite the victory, Arsenal’s injury list remains a pressing concern. Gabriel’s hamstring issue and Jurrien Timber’s knee injury were significant talking points. Arteta expressed uncertainty about the severity of these injuries, noting, “Gabi felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know how big that is, and with Jurrien as well, he was already struggling very early in the game.”

The defensive line has been particularly hard-hit, with four players sidelined due to injuries. Arteta acknowledged the challenges but maintained a positive outlook, stating, “We’ve lost four players in the defensive line in one week… We want it so much that we’re going to give it a real go and we are very excited for next week.”

Saka’s Emotional Return

Saka’s return to the pitch was not only a physical triumph but also an emotional one. Arteta reflected on Saka’s positive demeanor post-match, saying, “He was very positive. The first game is always the one, how am I going to feel? Because now I have a different opposition in front of me, different demands and pressure. He dealt with it really well.”

The connection between players and staff was also highlighted, with Arteta praising the recognition and gestures exchanged between Saka and the team’s support staff. “As a manager, I’m part of the staff. We all love this kind of recognition and gestures because it goes beyond the professional side of it,” Arteta remarked.

Squad Depth and Resilience

Arteta’s comments also touched on the broader theme of squad depth and resilience. With key players like Martinelli and Jesus missing significant portions of the season, the team has been forced to adapt. “How we have managed to be where we are with all those injuries… It’s what it is,” Arteta noted.

Jakub Kiwior’s versatility was praised as he steps up to fill gaps in the defense. Arteta commended Kiwior’s reliability, stating, “The good thing with Jakub is that he’s been very reliable. Every time we need him, he’s always there, he’s available and he does his job.”

Looking Ahead

As Arsenal prepares for upcoming challenges, including a crucial match against Real Madrid, Arteta remains optimistic about the team’s ability to overcome adversity. “If you ask the dressing room how much they want to play the next two games and the Real Madrid game, believe me, everybody wants to be on that pitch,” he said.

Arteta’s reflections underscore the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. As the season progresses, Arsenal’s ability to navigate injuries and maintain momentum will be crucial to their success.
