UPDATE: About 5 million above-ground swimming pools have been recalled due to a serious risk of toddler drownings, according to a press release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued Monday. This alarming recall follows the tragic deaths of nine toddlers between the ages of 22 months and 3 years, who drowned after accessing pools using footholds created by compression straps.
The incidents occurred across several states, including California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri between 2007 and 2022. Authorities warn that even with ladders removed, children can still climb into these pools through dangerous exterior features.
Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 years, with around 87% of these deaths happening in home pools or hot tubs. Approximately 4,000 drowning deaths occur each year in the U.S., averaging 11 deaths per day. Notably, about 25% of drowning incidents among young children involve above-ground pools, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures.
Parents often believe removing the ladder ensures safety, but experts warn this gives a “false sense of security.” Dennis Brickman, a safety design consultant, demonstrated that children can easily climb into these pools using support straps as footholds. He urged manufacturers to adopt safer alternatives.
Experts like Dr. Phyllis Agran, a pediatrics professor, emphasize that above-ground pools pose similar risks as in-ground pools. “The primary prevention is to have an isolation fence around the pool,” she stated. This includes a self-latching, self-closing gate, crucial for preventing child access.
A recent petition to the CPSC seeks mandatory regulations to ensure pool ladders are “child-resistant.” The American Academy of Pediatrics supports this initiative, advocating for designs that keep ladders out of reach when pools are not in use. “Toddlers are inquisitive and explore their surroundings,” warned Dr. Susan J. Kressly, president of the pediatric academy.
The recall affects any pool 48 inches and taller with compression straps running outside the vertical support legs, sold by Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup. Consumers are urged to contact the manufacturers immediately for a repair kit, which includes a rope to secure the pool’s structural integrity and allows the safe removal of the dangerous straps.
These pools, priced between $400 and over $1,000, have been available nationwide since 2002 at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Costco, and online at platforms such as Amazon and Wayfair.
Affected models include:
– Bestway and Coleman (sold from 2008-2024)
– Intex Models (sold from 2002-2012)
– Polygroup Models (sold from 2006-2025)
This recall serves as a critical reminder for parents and caregivers to remain vigilant about pool safety. Immediate action is required to prevent further tragedies. Share this information widely to ensure others are aware of the risks and necessary precautions.
