URGENT UPDATE: Santa Clara County is stepping up with a substantial $4.5 million in funding for the Second Harvest Food Bank as a government shutdown threatens to leave 133,000 residents facing food insecurity. The shutdown is set to halt CalFresh benefits starting November 1, forcing many families to choose between essential bills and food.
County leaders are rallying to ensure that no one goes hungry during this critical time. “We are here to support you,” declared Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee. “We’ll do all we can to make sure that you, your family, and your children are not going to miss meals.”
With over $1 billion already lost due to federal cuts in healthcare and food assistance, the county is determined to mitigate the impacts of the impending shutdown. “The federal government’s refusal to fund SNAP benefits is unjust, unnecessary, and cruel,” emphasized Supervisor Susan Ellenberg.
The funding will enable the Second Harvest Food Bank, which operates more than 600 distribution sites, to support the community amid rising food insecurity. CEO Leslie Bacho noted the organization is already serving one in six residents and anticipates longer lines as benefits are withheld.
“Our commitment is that we will continue to do everything we possibly can to provide access to these services,” stated County Executive James Williams. As local voters prepare to decide on Measure A, a temporary sales tax aimed at offsetting federal cuts, the county continues to face financial challenges due to the government’s decisions.
Residents affected by the upcoming CalFresh benefit suspension are urged to reach out for assistance. You can contact Second Harvest at 1-800-984-3663, dial 211 for Santa Clara County’s resource line, or visit the county’s Community Resource Guide for information on free food options nearby.
As the situation unfolds, Santa Clara County remains committed to taking immediate action to ensure that no family goes hungry during this critical time. Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story progresses.
