Providing hope and joy to pediatric cancer patients is the mission of the Little Wish Foundation, which has been granting small wishes to children undergoing treatment since its inception in 2010. Founded by Liz Loewenstein when she was just 16 years old, the foundation focuses on creating memorable moments for young patients across the United States.
Loewenstein’s inspiration for the foundation came from a personal experience. After losing her friend Max to Wilms Tumor, a type of childhood kidney cancer, she realized the profound impact that small gestures could have on a child’s spirit. “The beauty of life is just found in those little things,” she said, emphasizing the significance of her organization’s work. Max’s last wish was to receive a puppy, and the joy it brought him shaped Loewenstein’s vision for the foundation.
Since its establishment, the Little Wish Foundation has granted over 4,500 wishes to children in 19 hospitals across 11 states. The wishes range from toys to electronics, providing a much-needed distraction for young patients and their families during difficult times. One recipient, Cody Bevelhimer, who was diagnosed with T-Cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, experienced a significant lift in spirit when he received a computer as his wish. His mother, Tracy Bevelhimer, noted, “It wasn’t about the money. It was the fact that it was specifically for him to help him at a time when he really needed it.”
Loewenstein described the foundation’s efforts as a way to give children “a moment of hope, comfort, and joy.” Each wish is designed to be achievable and delivered without long waiting periods, making it a timely boost for families facing the challenges of cancer treatment.
As the holiday season approaches, the foundation is launching its 25 Days of Joy campaign, starting on Giving Tuesday. This initiative will highlight a different child each day who is undergoing treatment, allowing individuals to contribute directly to fulfilling their wishes. “Truly every single person can make a big difference,” Loewenstein remarked, encouraging community involvement.
For those interested in supporting the Little Wish Foundation, donations can be made through their website. The campaign not only raises funds but also spreads awareness about the challenges faced by pediatric cancer patients and the positive impact that small acts of kindness can have on their lives.
As the foundation continues its mission, it stands as a reminder of the power of community and compassion in making a meaningful difference in the lives of children battling serious illnesses.
