BREAKING: The picturesque town of Long Beach, Minnesota, is making headlines with the unveiling of its stunning Morning Glory Gardens, nestled along the shores of Lake Minnewaska. This vibrant oasis, created in the 1960s by local newspaper editor Ed Barsness, has transformed the area into a serene escape for residents and visitors alike.
Residents describe Long Beach as a close-knit community, with caretaker Terry Duhn praising its charm: “It’s small, it’s stretched out, yes. But it’s a great bunch of people.” This garden, which spans 100 feet, features seasonal blooms like carnations, geraniums, and black-eyed Susans, bringing color and tranquility to the town. “It makes me beam. It’s a labor of love,” Duhn said, highlighting the efforts of over 30 volunteers who assist in maintaining the garden.
The Morning Glory Chapel, which seats 12 comfortably, adds to the garden’s appeal. Having relocated in 1981, the chapel has become a cherished venue for four to eight weddings each year, starting in May and continuing through the fall. Local Mayor Mike Pfeiffer emphasized the chapel’s significance: “It gives them a place to go where they can reflect. They can get a little tranquility or serenity.”
In an exciting development, FFA students from Minnewaska High School collaborated on this year’s garden design, showcasing the community’s commitment to nurturing the beautiful landscape. Later this month, new pavers will be installed at the gardens, enhancing the experience for those who visit.
For couples interested in tying the knot at the chapel, a donation of $150 is requested. This charming venue and its lush surroundings are becoming increasingly popular, offering a unique backdrop for intimate ceremonies.
As the sun rises over the Morning Glory Gardens, Duhn reflects, “It is just brilliant. When it comes up, it’s to God’s glory.” This inspiring location not only serves as a garden and a chapel but also as a vital part of Long Beach’s identity, drawing visitors and providing a space for personal reflection.
