UPDATE: The father of 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel, one of the two children killed in the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, spoke publicly for the first time Thursday, sharing his grief and calling for empathy amidst an overwhelming tragedy.
In a heartfelt statement, the devastated father revealed, “Yesterday, a coward decided to take our 8-year-old son, Fletcher, away from us. Because of their actions, we will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him, and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming.”
This horrifying incident occurred early on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of Fletcher and another child, aged 10. A total of 18 others were injured, including 15 fellow students from Annunciation aged between 6 and 15. Three adults, all in their 80s, were also targeted in the shooting.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that all children involved are expected to survive; however, at least seven victims were in critical condition upon arrival at the hospital. Thomas Klemond, CEO of Hennepin Healthcare, described the condition of one child as “touch and go” Thursday morning, intensifying concerns over their recovery.
In his statement, Fletcher’s father emphasized the importance of remembering his son for who he was: “Moving forward, we ask not for your sympathy, but your empathy as our family and the Annunciation community grieve and try to make sense of such a senseless act of violence.” He urged parents to cherish their children, stating, “Give your kids an extra hug and kiss today. We love you. Fletcher, you’ll always be with us.”
This shooting has prompted widespread reactions. President Trump and Gov. Tim Walz ordered all U.S. and Minnesota state flags to fly at half-mast until the end of the month in honor of the victims. Vigils were held across the Twin Cities, demonstrating the community’s solidarity during this devastating time.
As the community copes with the aftermath, several initiatives are underway to support those affected. A moment of silence was observed before the Minnesota Twins game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, further highlighting the national impact of this tragic event.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the community remains on high alert as they seek healing from this heartbreaking incident. The recovery of the injured, particularly the children, is a pressing concern as families rally together to navigate the emotional fallout.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of violence on innocent lives and underscores the urgent need for community support and understanding in times of crisis.
