Dodgers’ Roki Sasaki Eyes Comeback as Season Approaches Clutch

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are buzzing with anticipation as rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki gears up for a potential return just in time for their push towards the 2025 World Series. After a rocky start to the season and subsequent injury, Sasaki has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, raising hopes of a late-season resurgence.

In an unexpected turn of events, Sasaki, who struggled with a 4.72 ERA in his eight early-season starts, is now actively participating in live batting practice and preparing for a simulated game on Friday. This development comes as the Dodgers assess their pitching options ahead of the playoffs, with Sasaki aiming to secure his place among the team’s top 13 pitchers.

The 23-year-old phenom, initially signed for a bargain $6.5 million after a celebrated career in Japan, faced challenges early on, including a shoulder impingement that sidelined him. However, recent reports indicate that Sasaki is now pain-free and throwing harder, hitting 96 mph in a recent bullpen session.

“I’m expecting to see pounding of the strike zone, conviction behind the throws, and just a better performer,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

As the Dodgers look to bolster their pitching depth, Sasaki’s return could provide essential insurance, especially as he may also transition to a relief role if needed. Roberts has made it clear that the team’s playoff roster will include the 13 best pitchers available, leaving the door open for Sasaki to contribute.

Despite his initial struggles, including a less-than-ideal strikeout-to-walk ratio of 24-to-22 and issues with command, Sasaki has taken advantage of his time on the injured list to refine his mechanics. Pitching coach Mark Prior noted the importance of Sasaki’s observations from the dugout, emphasizing that the young pitcher has learned valuable lessons about attacking hitters and maintaining control.

In addition to improving his fastball, Sasaki has embraced a two-seam pitch that could enhance his competitiveness on the mound. This adjustment is expected to keep hitters off balance and complement his already impressive pitch arsenal, which includes a devastating splitter.

With the postseason rapidly approaching, fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Sasaki can reclaim his form and make a significant impact in October. “My every intention is to get back on the major league mound and pitch again,” Sasaki stated through interpreter Will Ireton. “With that being said, I do need to fight for the opportunity too.”

As the Dodgers prepare for their playoff run, all eyes will be on Sasaki’s performance in the upcoming simulated game, which could determine his readiness for a minor-league rehab assignment. If he continues to demonstrate progress, he could be a decisive factor for the Dodgers as they aim for another championship title.

Stay tuned for further updates on Roki Sasaki and the Dodgers as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
