Braves Claim INF Ha-Seong Kim Off Waivers as Season Unfolds

BREAKING: The Atlanta Braves have just claimed infielder Ha-Seong Kim off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, aiming to address a critical middle-infield gap for the upcoming season. This move comes as the Braves navigate a challenging 2025 season, currently sitting at a disappointing 62-75 as of September 4, 2025.

With the Braves focused on a turnaround for next year, they are willing to take on Kim’s contract, which includes approximately $2 million for the remainder of this season and $16 million in 2026. The urgency of this acquisition is palpable, as the team has struggled significantly at the shortstop position, registering the lowest OPS in Major League Baseball at just .525.

The Braves have faced a series of setbacks, including the release of Orlando Arcia in late May and continued struggles from Nick Allen. Moreover, Ozzie Albies, a three-time All-Star, is experiencing his worst offensive performance to date, with a batting line of .234/.303/.350 and only 13 home runs in 137 games. With back-to-back $7 million club options on Albies’ contract after this season, the Braves are keen to bolster their infield options.

Kim, a right-handed hitter capable of playing three infield positions, previously shone as a defender with the San Diego Padres, accumulating 13 wins above replacement from 2022 to 2024. However, his performance with the Rays has been less than stellar, as he posted a .214/.290/.321 line in just 24 games this season, following recovery from shoulder surgery.

To clear space on their roster for Kim, the Braves have transferred Austin Riley to the 60-day injured list, indicating a strategic shift as they prepare for the remainder of the season and beyond. The Braves’ management is clearly signaling their commitment to improving their roster in anticipation of a stronger showing in 2026.

Stay tuned for updates on how this acquisition impacts the Braves’ lineup and their plans for the upcoming season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the team looks to reshape its future with this significant move.
