UPDATE: Camden Maniatis, the newly appointed quarterback for Andrew High School, has made headlines after leading the Thunderbolts to a dominant 52-0 victory over Hammond Central. This decisive win marks Andrew’s third triumph in the last four games, solidifying Maniatis’ role in the team’s triple-option offensive scheme.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior has embraced his new position after the graduation of the previous starter. “The team needed a quarterback, so I stepped up and took the role,” Maniatis stated. His performance has been nothing short of impressive, particularly following a standout game on September 19 against Waubonsie Valley, where he showcased his leadership and skill.
Maniatis’ emergence as a playmaker is gaining attention, especially from senior receiver Jameson O’Reilly, who expressed confidence in his quarterback’s abilities. “When he told me he was going to play quarterback, I was really excited because I knew he could do it,” O’Reilly remarked. Their offseason training together has clearly paid off, with O’Reilly recalling a key moment against Lincoln-Way West—“All seven throws were right on the money.”
Andrew’s head coach, Adam Lewandowski, had envisioned Maniatis in this leadership role for years, recognizing his potential since he was in middle school. “I always knew I wanted to see him at quarterback,” Lewandowski said. “It was just a process of getting him ready.”
Despite being new to the quarterback position, Maniatis brings valuable knowledge of the entire offense. “What helps me is that I know every position on the field,” he explained. “That makes it easier to run the offense and I’m comfortable in the pocket.” His confidence is evident as he continues to refine his skills, surprising himself with his rapid improvement.
To prepare for this season, Maniatis took his commitment seriously, enrolling at QB Era, a training facility in Willowbrook, where he practices every Sunday. “When I first went, I couldn’t even throw a proper spiral,” he admitted. “Now I’m throwing tight spirals consistently.” His dedication reflects his desire to lead and excel as a quarterback.
While he may miss playing receiver or running back, Maniatis’ bold approach and playmaker mentality are shaping the Thunderbolts’ offensive identity. “I love running the ball, but I also love throwing to my receivers because I know the routes will work,” he stated confidently. As the season progresses, his role will be crucial in the Thunderbolts’ quest for success.
With this recent victory and the momentum building, all eyes will be on Camden Maniatis as he continues to navigate his new role and lead Andrew High School through the remainder of the season.
