Pope Leo XIV Calls Chicago Union Leaders to Support Immigrants

Pope Leo XIV met with labor union leaders from Chicago on November 16, 2023, urging them to advocate for immigrants and embrace minority groups within their organizations. This call comes as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on immigration, particularly in Chicago, which is home to a significant immigrant population.

During the audience at the Vatican, the Pope emphasized the importance of solidarity in the labor movement, particularly in times of increasing division. He encouraged union leaders to stand firm against policies that marginalize immigrants and to create opportunities for inclusivity within their ranks. “Welcoming those who seek a better life is not just a moral duty but a necessity for our communities,” he stated.

The meeting took place as the Trump administration announced stricter immigration enforcement measures. These measures have raised concerns among community leaders in Chicago, who fear that they will further isolate immigrant populations. The Pope’s remarks are seen as a direct response to these developments, reinforcing the Catholic Church’s long-standing position on the dignity of every human being.

Union leaders expressed their gratitude for the Pope’s guidance and vowed to take action. Mary O’Connor, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor, remarked, “His message resonates deeply with us. We will work to ensure that our unions are places where everyone feels welcome and valued.”

The discussion also touched on the economic contributions of immigrants to the local workforce. According to a report by the American Immigration Council, immigrants make up approximately 18 percent of the labor force in Illinois. Their involvement is crucial for various sectors, from construction to healthcare, highlighting the need for policies that support rather than hinder their participation in the economy.

In addition to addressing immediate concerns, the Pope called on union leaders to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. He insisted that the labor movement has a critical role to play in shaping a more just and equitable society. “We must challenge the narrative that immigrants are a burden; they are integral to our communities and economies,” he emphasized.

The meeting concluded with a pledge from union leaders to engage more actively with local immigrant communities. They plan to host workshops and outreach programs aimed at educating union members about the benefits of diversity and fostering an inclusive environment.

As the situation in Chicago continues to evolve, the Pope’s intervention highlights the intersection of faith, labor, and social justice. His message serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by many immigrants and the collective responsibility of society to create welcoming spaces for all.
