Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park in downtown Denver is set to continue operations following a significant real estate deal in June 2023. This development allows for upgrades and enhancements at the 58-acre amusement park, which has faced uncertainty about its future along the Platte River for several years.
Mike Neary, executive vice president of Kroenke Sports Entertainment (KSE), expressed optimism in an email to The Denver Post, stating, “Elitch’s is an incredible business. We have every incentive to not only keep Elitch’s going, but to invest in rides and attractions and overall experience.”
This summer, the park celebrated the reopening of two of its prominent roller coasters. The Twister III: Storm Chaser resumed operations for the first time in 2025 after undergoing extensive repairs, while the Sidewinder, previously closed for maintenance since 2023, reopened two months ago.
KSE, which also owns the Ball Arena and local sports teams like the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche, acquired the remaining share of a property known as the River Mile from Revesco Properties in June. This area is part of a proposed 62-acre mixed-use redevelopment that includes the land occupied by Elitch Gardens.
In 2015, Revesco and KSE jointly purchased the property, intending to redevelop it into a large residential and retail complex adjacent to Ball Arena. The original proposal aimed to relocate Elitch Gardens to pave the way for a project that would accommodate approximately 15,000 residents, alongside commercial spaces within 40- to 60-story towers. This plan received city approval in 2018 but has not progressed, leaving the future of the theme park uncertain.
Despite these challenges, the recent buyout by KSE suggests a commitment to maintaining Elitch Gardens at its current location. Cindy Hann, a spokesperson for the park, refrained from commenting on any potential relocation but noted the season’s attendance has been remarkably positive. “Currently, we are focused entirely on creating thrilling experiences right here in the heart of Denver,” Hann stated. She highlighted the preparations for upcoming Halloween and holiday season events, emphasizing their satisfaction with the 2024 season and optimistic projections for 2025.
Elitch Gardens has a rich history, having operated for 135 years and moving to its present location in 1995. The park has since evolved into a modern theme park known for its thrilling rides and attractions. As it looks to the future, the recent investment from KSE may signal a renewed commitment to enhancing visitor experiences and maintaining its presence in downtown Denver.
