Community Mourns Loss of Toxicologist Lowell C. Van Berkom

Lowell C. Van Berkom, a respected toxicologist and beloved family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on October 24, 2025, in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. Surrounded by his family, his legacy as a pioneer in forensic science and a loving husband and father will be remembered by many.

Born to John and Esther Van Berkom, Lowell graduated from North Dakota State University in 1954 with a degree in pharmacy. His career began in Powers Lake, North Dakota, where he managed and later purchased Frank’s Pharmacy. Tragically, the store was destroyed in a fire in 1964, prompting Lowell to further his education. He returned to NDSU, earning a master’s degree in toxicology in 1968.

Career and Contributions to Forensic Science

Lowell’s professional journey led him to the State of Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Forensic Science Laboratory, where he served as a toxicologist. Notably, he initiated the breath alcohol program, significantly contributing to forensic toxicology in Minnesota. He ascended to the role of Director of the BCA Laboratory, a position he held until his retirement in 1998.

In retirement, Lowell continued to make an impact by working as a consultant in forensic toxicology, sharing his expertise and knowledge with those in the field. His work not only advanced forensic practices but also supported law enforcement in ensuring public safety.

Family Life and Community Engagement

Lowell married his childhood sweetheart, Leanne Van Berkom, in 1961. Together, they raised five children: Jonathan, Michael, Craig, Christy, and their late daughter, Beth Zeilinger. The couple enjoyed a rich family life, highlighted by annual trips to Cancun and summers spent at Pelican Lake, where they created lasting memories with family and friends.

Lowell’s love for travel and adventure, combined with his commitment to family, fostered a strong support network. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Leanne, and their extensive family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Barbara, and several in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Lowell’s passing is deeply felt by those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, including Adonna, Darlene, Yvonne, Lupe, and Roger, as well as brothers-in-law and his daughter Beth. His legacy will be honored by his family and friends, who cherished the time spent with him.

A visitation will take place on November 2nd from 16:00 to 19:00 at Bradshaw Funeral Home, located at 4600 Greenhaven Drive, White Bear Lake. A celebration of his life will follow on November 3rd at 11:00 at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 4880 Hodgson Road, Shoreview, with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment will occur at Incarnation Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Lowell C. Van Berkom’s legacy is one of dedication, love, and impact. His contributions to the field of toxicology and the lives of his family and community will resonate for years to come.
