NYC Health + Hospitals Secures $10.7M to Enhance Abortion Services

NYC Health + Hospitals has received a significant boost in funding, amounting to $10.7 million, from the New York State Abortion Access Program. This financial support aims to enhance abortion care across its network of 11 hospitals over the next three years. The investment will facilitate the hiring of additional healthcare providers and patient navigators, the acquisition of necessary equipment and supplies, and the expansion of access to abortion doulas, alongside providing financial assistance to patients.

Expanding Access and Services

In the year 2024, the health system reported performing over 6,000 abortions. The comprehensive services offered include both medication and procedural abortions at hospital-based clinics. Additionally, patients can access abortion care through telehealth options via the Virtual ExpressCare platform. This innovative approach allows patients to connect with licensed clinicians for assessment and counseling from the comfort of their homes.

The telehealth service is available daily from 09:00 to 21:00 and accommodates over 200 languages. Patients can access the service by visiting expresscare.nyc or by calling 1-718-360-8981. This initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that individuals can obtain the care they need, regardless of their circumstances.

Support from State Leadership

Dr. Marisa Nadas, the Director of Complex Family Planning at NYC Health + Hospitals, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the funding. “I am thrilled that Governor Kathy Hochul and other state-level leadership have chosen to continue to put resources toward this essential healthcare service,” she stated. Dr. Nadas emphasized that abortion care is crucial for New Yorkers to maintain agency over their lives and to achieve their full potential. “When people have control over their futures, we all benefit,” she added.

The funding from the New York State Abortion Access Program is indicative of a broader commitment to strengthening healthcare services related to reproductive rights. With these resources, NYC Health + Hospitals aims to ensure that all individuals have access to comprehensive and compassionate abortion care, reinforcing the health system’s mission to serve New Yorkers effectively.
