Community Mourns Passing of Educator and Family Matriarch Linda Leete

Linda Gudmundson Leete passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was a beloved educator, mother, and community member, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.

Born on April 29, 1950, in Merced, California, Linda was the second of four children to Westerdahl and Norma Gudmundson. In 1957, her family relocated to San Rafael, where she spent much of her childhood and early adult years. Linda attended San Rafael High School, where she met her future husband, Paul Leete, during her senior year. Their partnership marked the beginning of a lifelong journey together.

Following high school, Linda pursued higher education at UC Berkeley, while Paul was drafted into the US Navy. Upon his return, the couple moved to Chico, where Linda continued her studies at California State University, Chico. She earned a bachelor’s degree, a teaching credential, and a master’s degree in English.

Linda began her teaching career at Chico Junior High School, where she taught English for many years. She took pride in leading the school’s drama department, producing numerous theatre productions that delighted both students and audiences. Later, she continued her passion for education by teaching English at Butte Community College, as well as at Chapman Elementary School and Blue Oak Charter School.

Beyond her career in education, Linda and Paul shared a passion for home design and development. They bought and remodeled homes during their early years in Chico, cultivating a strong interest in real estate. Linda’s keen eye for floorplan creation and design contributed significantly to various residential subdivisions and commercial complexes in the area.

Linda had a zest for life, reflected in her love for travel, reading, and engaging in political discussions. She was deeply committed to her family, prioritizing them above all else. Her two children, Christine and Tim, were her heart and soul, and she cherished her grandchildren, attending every performance, activity, and sporting event they participated in.

Following the passing of her husband in 2021, Linda grew even closer to her sister-in-law, Pam Young. Together, they embraced learning and laughter through OLLI classes and Zumba sessions, creating joyful memories during this time. In her final months, Linda was lovingly cared for by her daughter and sister-in-law, showcasing the strength of their family bond.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Westerdahl and Norma Gudmundson; her sister, Betty Buzzel; and her husband, Paul Leete. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Kermen (Nick); son, Tim Leete (Sara); grandchildren, Anthony Kermen, Courtney Ortega (Luis), Kylee, Kaitlin, and Tyler Leete; sister, Reta Gudmundson (Gary Spitzack); brother, John Gudmundson (Hye); sister-in-law, Pam Young (Todd); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Linda will be remembered for her generous heart, unwavering commitment to her family, and her willingness to help others in need. Her grace and class throughout her life have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
