Mississippi Arts Experience Hosts Free Screening of “Sinners”

The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience will celebrate the success of the acclaimed film “Sinners” with a free screening on October 15, 2025, at the Temple Theater in Meridian, Mississippi. Following the film, attendees can engage in a panel discussion on October 16 at The MAX, further exploring the themes and cultural significance of this notable production.

Set against the backdrop of Mississippi, “Sinners” tells the story of twin brothers returning to Clarksdale in 1932 to open a juke joint. The film blends historical drama, social commentary, and elements of horror, accompanied by a soundtrack featuring renowned Mississippi musicians, including Bobby Rush, Cedric Burnside, James “Super Chikan” Johnson, Sharde Thomas-Mallory, and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. Since its release, it has gained recognition as the highest-grossing original live-action film in the United States in over 15 years, marking a significant achievement for the film industry.

The screening will commence at 6:30 p.m. at the Temple Theater, welcoming the public to enjoy this cinematic experience. The following evening, The MAX will host a panel discussion that features a diverse group of speakers, including Chandra Williams, executive director of the Crossroads Cultural Arts Center; Tyler Yarbrough, project manager for the Partnership for a Healthier America; Nina Parikh, director of Film Mississippi; and Jay Wesley, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians who contributed as a cultural consultant for the film.

The panel will be moderated by Ralph Eubanks, a noted writer and current writer-in-residence at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. The event will conclude with a live performance by Rev. Slim, a talented blues artist from Grenada, Mississippi, ensuring an engaging and entertaining atmosphere.

Penny Kemp, president and CEO of The MAX, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Everyone who has seen ‘Sinners’ wants to discuss it. I’ve seen the film twice, and I can hardly wait to see it again. Bringing it to The Temple is a perfect fit, and we look forward to a lively discussion and live music at The MAX.”

This event is made possible through collaborations with Film Mississippi, the Mississippi Film Society, the Mississippi Humanities Council, and Downtown Meridian. Attendees can enjoy concessions, including traditional movie snacks, beer, and wine, with all proceeds benefiting the Temple Theater.

It is important to note that “Sinners” is rated R for strong bloody violence, sexual content, and language, and parental guidance is strongly suggested for younger viewers.
