Aircraft owners at the Oakland County International Airport will benefit from a significant infrastructure upgrade, thanks to a $6 million grant approved by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The funding will support the renovation of nearly 8,000 feet of pavement, with work scheduled to commence in spring 2024.
According to Cheryl Bush, airport manager, the grant comes from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) but is managed by MDOT. The funds will be allocated for reconstructing and enhancing lighting for Taxilanes D, F, and Y, as well as refurbishing the airport apron. The county plans to contribute just over $151,000 to supplement the state funds.
Bush informed the county commission’s Economic Development and Infrastructure committee that the renovation was long overdue. “The pavement has been pretty rough. We’ve had some complaints about it,” she noted during a recent meeting, emphasizing that the project could not proceed without federal support.
Phased Renovation to Minimize Disruption
The renovation will take place in phases over a period of four months, ensuring that the approximately 400 airplanes stationed at the airport remain accessible to their owners throughout the construction. The initial phase will focus on the north side of the airport, allowing operations to continue with minimal interruption.
In addition to the pavement renovation, the committee advised the commission to approve a separate grant of nearly $2.2 million from MDOT. This funding aims to reimburse the airport for acquiring snow-removal equipment and purchasing land to enhance the protection zone for Runway 27L, as well as to renovate pavement for Taxilane M.
Airport’s Importance and Upcoming Commission Meeting
Located in Waterford Township, the Oakland County International Airport ranks as the second-busiest airport in Michigan. The upcoming general business meeting of the county commissioners is scheduled for 6 p.m. on October 30, 2023, at the auditorium located at 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac. The full agenda and supporting documents can be accessed online.
The renovation project not only reflects the county’s commitment to improving aviation infrastructure but also highlights the importance of federal and state collaboration in facilitating essential upgrades to enhance safety and efficiency for all users of the airport.
