The White House will reopen its public tours on December 2, 2023, after a hiatus that began in August due to ongoing construction of a new ballroom. This construction project, attributed to President Donald Trump, has faced significant scrutiny, including criticism from former First Lady and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who accused Trump of “destroying” the White House.
The renovation involves a ballroom estimated to cost approximately $300 million. Social media recently highlighted the project, showcasing photos of construction equipment dismantling parts of the East Wing. Despite concerns, Trump assured that the construction would not interfere with the functionality of the White House.
Although the East Wing, which typically serves as the starting point for tours, is currently out of commission, visitors will still have access to an “updated route,” as mentioned in a news release from First Lady Melania Trump. This route aims to provide an opportunity to experience the history and beauty of the White House.
Holiday Celebrations and Tour Details
The return of tours aligns with the festive season, allowing visitors to enjoy the White House adorned with Christmas decorations. According to the release, all tours in December will feature these decorations, which will be thoughtfully curated under Melania Trump’s direction.
“Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the beloved annual tradition that transforms the White House into a festive reflection of the spirit, warmth, faith, and hope of the holiday season,” the First Lady stated.
Bookings for the tours will be available 30 days in advance, and those interested can request a tour through their respective members of Congress. This initiative aims to engage the public and celebrate the holiday spirit in the nation’s capital, despite the ongoing changes within the White House itself.
The resumption of tours represents a significant moment for both the administration and the public, allowing for a renewed connection to the historic residence during one of the year’s most celebrated periods.
