Vatican Launches Investigation into Alleged Antisemitic Incident

The Vatican has initiated an investigation following allegations of an antisemitic incident involving a member of the Swiss Guard. The reported event occurred on October 29, 2023, during a papal audience at the entrance to St. Peter’s Square, where two Jewish women were allegedly targeted.

The women, part of an international Jewish delegation attending the audience, claimed a Swiss Guard made a spitting gesture towards them while uttering the phrase “the Jews.” This incident coincided with an event dedicated to commemorating the anniversary of a significant 1965 declaration regarding the Catholic Church’s relations with Jews and other non-Christians.

In response to inquiries about the incident, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed that the Swiss Guard had received a report detailing the alleged antisemitic behavior. Bruni stated that preliminary investigations suggested the incident arose from a disagreement regarding a request to take photographs at a guard post.

Papal Audience Reaffirms Commitment to Combat Antisemitism

During the same papal audience, Pope Leo XIV addressed the gathered crowd, emphasizing the Church’s zero tolerance for antisemitism. His remarks elicited extended applause from attendees. “The Church does not tolerate antisemitism and fights it,” he declared, reinforcing the importance of fostering positive relations with the Jewish community.

Israeli writer and theatre director Michal Govrin, one of the women involved in the incident, confirmed her account in a conversation with the Associated Press and an interview with Kathpress. She recounted her experience as she approached St. Peter’s Square with a colleague, describing the guard’s actions as offensive and inappropriate.

The Pontifical Swiss Guard, established in 1506, is recognized as the oldest standing military corps in the world and is tasked with protecting the Pope. In light of the incident, Bruni reiterated the Guard’s commitment to upholding the dignity of all individuals and adhering to principles of equality and non-discrimination.

As the investigation unfolds, the Vatican seeks to address the concerns raised by this incident and reinforce its position against antisemitism, ensuring that similar occurrences are not tolerated in the future. The implications of this event resonate beyond the walls of the Vatican, highlighting ongoing challenges in fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding.
