The Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) appointed its new leadership team for the 2025-2026 term during the Annual Session and Primary Care Summit held in Addison, Texas, on November 15, 2025. The event highlighted the organization’s commitment to advancing family medicine in the state.
Ikemefuna Okwuwa, MD, has been named president of TAFP. Dr. Okwuwa is the residency program director at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in the Permian Basin. He also serves as the chairman of the board of directors for the Permian Basin Health Network, which is a physician-hospital organization focused on improving healthcare delivery in the region.
Dr. Okwuwa graduated from the University of Benin Medical School in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He completed his residency training at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in the Permian Basin. His previous roles within TAFP include serving as both a new physician member and an at-large member on the organization’s Board of Directors, showcasing his extensive involvement in family medicine advocacy.
During the installation ceremony, TAFP recognized the importance of strong leadership in guiding the organization through ongoing challenges and opportunities in healthcare. The newly installed officers are expected to work closely together to enhance education, advocate for family physicians, and improve patient care across Texas.
The TAFP Annual Session and Primary Care Summit brought together family physicians from various regions, emphasizing collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the medical community. Attendees participated in workshops, discussions, and networking sessions aimed at addressing current issues in primary care.
With Dr. Okwuwa at the helm, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians aims to strengthen its position as a leading voice for family medicine in Texas, ensuring that the needs of both physicians and patients are met effectively.
