On March 1, 2023, McCollum lost his footing and plummeted down the rocky terrain. He initially believed the fall would be fatal. “The wind was knocked out of me and I remember thinking it was probably all over for me,” he recounted. The fall resulted in severe injuries, including a fractured spine, broken ribs, internal bleeding, and a head injury.
Fortunately, McCollum had a personal locator beacon that his parents encouraged him to carry. After activating the device, emergency services were notified, triggering a response that ultimately led to his rescue.
