Construction is set to advance significantly at San Diego International Airport (SAN) as the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority announced the launch of Phase 1B of the new Terminal 1 project. This phase will commence on September 8, 2023, with key roadway closures aimed at ensuring the safety of both travelers and construction crews.
From September 8, the arrivals roadway connecting Terminals 1 and 2 will close. Travelers relying on this route will need to use designated on-airport detour paths. To assist passengers in navigating these changes, the airport authority has prepared detailed maps and provided an animated video outlining the detour routes.
For those traveling on foot, the existing outdoor walkway between the two terminals will remain accessible until September 22. After this date, pedestrians will need to utilize the free Terminal Loop Shuttle, operational daily from 06:00 to 23:00. Shuttle pickup points can also be found on the airport’s official website, ensuring that travelers remain informed and can plan accordingly.
A critical milestone in the project will occur on September 22, when the current Terminal 1 will permanently close following the departure of its final flights. The facility will then be demolished to pave the way for the next phase of construction, which promises to enhance the airport’s infrastructure significantly.
Phase 1B is expected to introduce 11 additional gates, improved infrastructure, and upgraded passenger amenities, including customer lounges. This development is a crucial step toward modernizing the terminal, addressing the increasing passenger demand, and enhancing the overall airport experience.
Real-time updates on construction progress and detour information will be available on the airport’s official website, san.org. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing changes to ensure a smooth transit experience during this transitional period.
