Pennsylvania has broadened its Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) by adding a new insurer, enhancing access to affordable health coverage for families across the state. The Department of Human Services announced that WellKids by PA Health & Wellness will join the network of managed care organizations offering CHIP coverage, increasing choices for families during a time when many still face challenges in securing health insurance for their children.
New Insurer Enhances Coverage Options
This expansion follows the state’s first CHIP re-procurement since 2013, allowing for more plans aimed at families seeking health care for children and teenagers. Dr. Val Arkoosh, Secretary of the Department of Human Services, emphasized the importance of ensuring that children have access to necessary medical care. “Pennsylvania’s kids deserve the best start in life we can give them, and that begins with making sure they can get health care when they need it,” she stated.
CHIP caters to children up to the age of 19 who do not qualify for Medicaid, providing free or low-cost health coverage based on family income. Importantly, no family earns too much to be eligible. Parents can select the plan that best meets their needs, with coverage options that include routine checkups, immunizations, emergency care, mental health services, and dental, vision, and hearing care.
WellKids by PA Health & Wellness Joins the Network
WellKids by PA Health & Wellness, a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, brings significant experience from its operation of Medicaid plans, including Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program. The new CHIP plan will be accessible to families in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania and will provide a comprehensive range of services, from preventive and urgent care to dental, vision, and pharmacy coverage.
The selection of WellKids was influenced by its accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, which includes a Health Equity designation. This accreditation highlights the company’s commitment to quality and equitable access to care. Starting in January 2026, CHIP will be managed by a network of nine organizations: Aetna, Capital Blue Cross, Geisinger Health Plan, Health Partners Plan, Highmark, Keystone First, UnitedHealthcare, UPMC, and PA Health & Wellness.
For families, the addition of WellKids means increased competition among insurers, providing more flexibility in selecting plans that align with their doctors, pharmacies, and children’s health needs. This change aims to strengthen CHIP, which serves as a vital resource for thousands of children in Pennsylvania who depend on the program for doctor visits, prescriptions, and preventive care.
