A fire on New Year’s Eve at a residence in East Grand Forks has left its sole occupant displaced. The incident occurred at 920 Second Ave. NE, where flames erupted in the basement near the furnace. Fortunately, the resident was not home at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. The East Grand Forks Fire Department, supported by the East Grand Forks Police Department and an Altru ambulance, worked diligently to bring the fire under control. A total of 21 fire personnel participated in the operation, utilizing three fire apparatus to extinguish the flames and address hot spots.
Fire Cause and Damage Assessment
While the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, authorities have classified it as unintentional. According to a release from the East Grand Forks Fire Department (EGFFD), the extensive fire and smoke damage has resulted in the residence being deemed a total loss. The structure was completely destroyed in the blaze.
Assistant Chief Paul Hansen described the incident as an unfortunate coincidence, noting that some individuals may not be home during the holiday season. “It was more of a coincidence. Some people just aren’t home during the holiday and it just so happened to be an unfortunate situation,” he remarked.
Despite the distressing circumstances, three dogs were rescued from the residence and subsequently returned to their owner. The displaced resident is currently staying with family while arrangements are made for temporary housing.
The fire department remained on the scene for several hours to ensure all hot spots were fully extinguished and to prevent any potential flare-ups. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, particularly in residential settings during festive occasions.
As investigations into the cause continue, community members are urged to review their fire safety protocols, especially as the winter season often sees an increase in heating-related incidents.
