“New Money Explores Riches and Reality at Tallinn Black Nights”

Estonian writer-director-producer Rain Rannu premiered his latest film, New Money, at the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 14, 2023. This comedy-drama poses a thought-provoking question: what would one do with more than 50 million euros, approximately $58 million?

The film follows the lives of Taavi and Liisa, portrayed by returning actors Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn, who find themselves thrust into the chaos of sudden wealth. The narrative begins when the modest couple, a teacher and an IT professional, agree to a tabloid interview that spirals out of control. As their newfound fortune attracts unwanted attention, including anonymous insults and dubious proposals, Taavi reflects on the challenges that accompany their unexpected riches.

Rannu described New Money as not merely a sequel to his previous film, Free Money, but rather an opportunity to further explore the characters he grew fond of. He stated, “When I made the last one, I really liked those two characters, and I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them.” The organic process of reuniting with the actors led to the development of this new story.

One notable aspect of the film is its exploration of financial literacy and the impact of sudden wealth. The synopsis highlights that the couple’s decision to share their story leads to confusion and overwhelming situations, with Taavi ultimately regretting the day he became a millionaire. Rannu noted, “One of the themes of this movie was ‘more money, more problems’,” reflecting the film’s commentary on the complexities of wealth.

The filmmaking process itself was not without its challenges. Rannu, who co-edited the feature, expressed his enthusiasm for the editing process, stating, “I really enjoy the process because in editing, you can make it or break it.” This attention to detail allows for the subtle nuances that shape the film’s narrative.

With the film receiving a warm reception at the festival, including plenty of laughter from the audience, Rannu hinted at the possibility of a third installment in the Free Money and New Money universe. He mentioned that “a couple of good ideas are floating around already,” suggesting that the journey of Taavi and Liisa may continue in the future.

As the film industry continues to explore themes of wealth and its consequences, New Money stands out as a comedic yet insightful look at the dreams and nightmares that accompany financial windfalls.
