Retiring Congressman Jerry Nadler has officially endorsed Micah Lasher, his former aide and current New York state assemblyman, to succeed him in New York’s 12th Congressional District. Nadler made the announcement in a video posted on the social media platform X, stating, “One candidate by every measure, stands above the rest,” and expressing pride in supporting Lasher’s candidacy.
Nadler highlighted Lasher’s extensive achievements, which include collaboration with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to combat gun violence and significant contributions while serving in the attorney general’s office. He also noted Lasher’s role in formulating the state’s billion-dollar investment in mental health care and his defense of abortion access.
Lasher, who has held his position in the New York State Assembly since January 2023, has been recognized for his legislative efforts. Nadler praised him as “New York’s protector in chief” against policies from former President Donald Trump. He emphasized Lasher’s initiatives, including landmark legislation aimed at consumer protection and combating housing discrimination.
“Micah’s record as a legislator truly sets him apart,” Nadler further asserted. “He’s written and passed landmark legislation to protect consumers and stop housing discrimination. He’s fought to ensure continued access to vaccines, and his bill to keep ICE out of our schools, hospitals, and houses of worship is on the fast track for passage right now.”
In response to the endorsement, Lasher expressed his gratitude toward Nadler, stating, “Jerry Nadler has set an incredibly high bar for decades for smart, principled, progressive leadership on issue after issue. I’m honored beyond words to have his support.”
Lasher officially announced his candidacy for Congress in September 2023. He faces a competitive field that includes Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of the late President John F. Kennedy, political activist Cameron Kasky, known for surviving the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, and Liam Elkind, a 26-year-old community organizer.
Despite the competition, Nadler has previously downplayed Schlossberg’s prospects, commenting on his lack of a substantial public service record. Meanwhile, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has endorsed Schlossberg, adding another layer to the race.
In terms of campaign financing, Lasher is currently leading with over $1.1 million on hand, according to the Federal Election Commission. Schlossberg, in contrast, has reported approximately $605,000 in campaign funds.
As the race develops, Lasher’s endorsement from Nadler highlights a significant backing from a seasoned political figure, positioning him as a strong candidate for the upcoming election in New York’s 12th Congressional District.
