Ique Langa, a filmmaker from Mozambique, presents his feature debut, O Profeta (The Prophet), which will premiere in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam on January 30, 2024. This striking black-and-white film, crafted over nine years, delves into themes of faith, doubt, and the allure of the supernatural. Langa emphasizes caution regarding the “doors” one chooses to open in life, a central motif in the narrative.
Set in the small town of Manjacaze, the film follows Pastor Hélder as his faith begins to wane. In a desperate attempt to reclaim his spiritual connection, he turns to witchcraft and sacrifice. The film’s narrative raises poignant questions about the consequences of such choices, particularly in a context where many are drawn to the promises of alternative powers offered by emerging religious leaders.
Langa’s journey to create this film was deeply personal. He spent much of his childhood in Manjacaze, where he observed a significant rise in churches led by self-proclaimed prophets. “I went to visit my aunt one time, and there was one church like that. When I went back two months later, there were three such churches,” he recounted. This rapid increase inspired Langa to examine the spiritual climate in Mozambique, where traditional beliefs coexist with Christianity.
As he describes, the film allows him to explore his own questions regarding faith and identity. “The story came from a very personal place,” Langa shared in an interview. He contrasts the struggles of Pastor Hélder with the grounded nature of the pastor’s wife, who remains content with her reality. “She is a lot more connected to something profound,” he explained, highlighting the dynamic between the two characters.
The film unfolds at a meditative pace, employing unique camera angles and a lack of haste to reflect the burdens of the past and present. Langa expressed that this narrative framework also enabled him to confront the “traumas, as well as gifts from my lineage,” considering his contribution to society and the journey of ancestors after death. In Mozambican culture, it is believed that loved ones who pass away become spirits before transitioning into ancestors.
Throughout the film, Langa aims to portray the duality of traditional and Christian beliefs, exploring how they can inhabit the same space. “Even though the pastor is in a Christian setting, he is still affected by the desire for something supernatural,” he noted. This exploration of faith and desire resonates on a human level, making Pastor Hélder’s journey relatable to audiences worldwide.
Langa made a deliberate choice to present O Profeta in black and white, a decision that was evident to him early in the creative process. Despite encouragement to produce the film in color, he found that the story resonated more deeply in shades of gray. He drew inspiration from renowned filmmakers known for their transcendental cinema, such as Robert Bresson and Yasujirō Ozu, and from Mozambican artist Malangatana Ngwenya.
The film was crafted with a non-professional cast, all hailing from the local community, which Langa believes enriched the storytelling. “This movie was all done with non-actors. Nobody’s a professional,” he emphasized. The production faced challenges, including the deaths of two cast members during filming, which Langa incorporated into the narrative to honor their memory.
As the premiere date approaches, Langa reflects on the arduous nine-year journey of bringing O Profeta to life. “When we started making this film, we just wanted to make a movie and be able to say we completed it,” he stated. Now, with excitement, he looks forward to showcasing his work at the Rotterdam festival.
Looking ahead, Langa is already diving into his next project, titled Chapa 100, which tells the story of aging street vendors in his hometown of Maputo. “It’s the story of an older couple that meets later in life, and something magical happens,” he shared, hinting at the creativity that continues to flow from this emerging filmmaker.
