Lockheed Martin and SMU Collaborate to Enhance Philippines’ Tech Landscape

Lockheed Martin has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art research laboratory in the Philippines, aimed at advancing the development of systems and prototypes across various industries. This initiative is part of a strengthened technical collaboration with the Philippines and Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas, United States.

The collaboration is designed to broaden a fighter jet project for the Philippines and create a platform for technology transfer and information sharing. Lockheed Martin’s comprehensive approach includes business incubation funding, government initiatives, and academic programmes, all aimed at fostering innovation within the nation.

Strengthening Local Expertise

The proposed research laboratory will serve as a hub for Filipino professionals, enabling them to develop innovative solutions and prototypes tailored to local needs. The Centre for Digital and Human-Augmented Manufacturing and the Deason Innovation Gym at SMU will provide essential research and development expertise. This expertise includes areas such as digital modelling, simulation, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Ben Zoghi, Dean for Advanced Studies and Industry Partnerships at SMU, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that it would “significantly boost the Philippines’ academia and industry.” He highlighted that the project aims to equip the nation with “digital innovation technologies” that can enhance its economy and competitiveness in the global industrial sector.

The collaboration also envisions providing access to advanced tools and equipment housed at SMU. This will facilitate partnerships with universities and companies in the Philippines, creating a robust ecosystem for technology development and innovation.

Broader Ambitions for Defence and Innovation

Jess Koloini, Director of Business Development at Lockheed Martin, noted that the Philippines programme is expected to extend beyond enhancing the nation’s defence capabilities. It is integrated within the company’s wider strategy to develop fresh capabilities and intellectual property through meaningful collaborations.

This initiative not only represents a significant investment in the Philippines’ technological future but also reflects Lockheed Martin’s commitment to fostering local talent and innovation. As the project progresses, it is anticipated to have a lasting impact on the region’s industrial landscape, paving the way for future advancements in technology and research.

The establishment of this research laboratory underscores the growing importance of international collaborations in driving technological progress and economic development. As Lockheed Martin and SMU embark on this ambitious project, the potential benefits for the Philippines and its professionals are substantial, promising a brighter future in a rapidly evolving global economy.
