Hwang Dong-hyuk Launches New Crime Series ‘The Dealer’ on Netflix

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the visionary behind the global sensation Squid Game, has announced his next project in collaboration with Netflix. The streaming platform confirmed on March 6, 2024, that production has commenced on a new original series titled The Dealer, set to captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative.

This series features a star-studded cast, including Jung So-min, Ryoo Seung-bum, and Lee Soo-hyuk. It is described as a “high-stakes casino crime drama” that promises to deliver a unique viewing experience. The series marks the directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Choi Young-hwan, known for his work on prominent Korean films such as Smugglers and The Thieves.

The Dealer follows the story of Geonhwa, portrayed by Jung So-min, a skilled casino dealer whose world shatters when her wedding plans fall through amid a housing scam. This event forces her back into the dark underbelly of illegal gambling, where she must confront her long-suppressed supernatural abilities that offer her an edge at the gaming tables.

A Talented Cast and Intriguing Plot Development

Jung’s character, Geonhwa, is described by Netflix as a departure from her previous roles, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Ryoo Seung-bum plays Hwang Chisu, a desperate gambler whose life becomes entwined with Geonhwa’s dangerous escapades. Lee Soo-hyuk co-stars as Jo Jun, a skilled casino player with an enigmatic presence that adds tension to the unfolding drama. Ryu Kyung-soo rounds out the main cast as Choi Wooseung, Geonhwa’s fiancé, who balances a gentle demeanor with a hidden resolve as a detective.

The premise of The Dealer delves into themes of resilience and the struggle for control in a world riddled with deception and risk. As Geonhwa navigates the complexities of her new reality, viewers can anticipate a gripping exploration of morality and survival.

Future Prospects for Hwang Dong-hyuk and Netflix

While Netflix has remained tight-lipped about any potential developments for a U.S.-based spinoff of Squid Game, fans can look forward to experiencing the intricate storytelling in The Dealer. The series is expected to further solidify Hwang Dong-hyuk’s reputation as a master storyteller in the realm of entertainment.

With the production of The Dealer underway, audiences can expect a compelling blend of crime, drama, and supernatural elements when the series premieres on Netflix. As anticipation builds, the collaboration between Hwang and the streaming giant promises to deliver yet another captivating narrative for global viewers.
