Duke Nicholson, the 26-year-old grandson of renowned actor Jack Nicholson, is stepping into the spotlight with his first leading role in the crime thriller The Deputy. Directed by longtime friend Matt Sukkar, the film is set against a backdrop of small-town corruption and is based on Victor Gischler‘s novel. It captures the chaotic essence of a single night filled with unexpected twists and turns.
The film features a notable cast, including William H. Macy, Tiffany Haddish, Stephen Dorff, and Julia Fox. The story follows Toby Sawyer, portrayed by Nicholson, who is thrust into a bizarre situation when he is tasked with guarding a corpse that mysteriously vanishes. This unexpected event leads him into a frenzied journey through the darker side of his community.
The Deputy is produced by Andrew Stevens, Hicham Benkirane, and Sukkar, with executive producers that include Carlo Bernard and Mark Canton. The film aims to blend noir atmosphere with engaging character-driven storytelling, reminiscent of the early works of the Coen brothers. Following its launch at the Cannes Film Festival, international sales have been secured across Europe, Australia, and Canada, with plans for a festival debut in 2026.
Nicholson’s journey into acting has been anything but conventional. He initially aspired to become a director, a passion that ignited during his high school film classes. “I wanted to direct — that was my first thing,” he explained. However, as he began acting in friends’ projects, he discovered a new love for performance. His background in film is evident, yet he has deliberately carved out his own identity in the industry.
Reflecting on his grandfather’s influence, Nicholson noted, “He’s always emphasized the importance of developing your own material — writing, creating projects with friends.” This advice has resonated deeply with him, shaping his approach to his career. He aims to create and direct projects that resonate with his vision, rather than solely relying on auditions.
Nicholson’s character in The Deputy represents a unique challenge. Toby Sawyer is depicted as a part-time lawman who finds himself in over his head. “It’s one of those stories where someone who’s not equipped for a situation gets thrown into it,” he shared. The character’s journey is not just about survival; it serves as a kind of unconventional coming-of-age story, pushing him to confront his limitations and grow.
As he prepares for this new chapter, Nicholson is also focusing on his own writing and directing projects. He is in the final stages of completing a script he intends to direct, revealing his ambition to merge acting with storytelling. His admiration for John Cassavetes highlights his desire to be both in front of and behind the camera, aiming for a career that reflects his artistic vision.
In addition to his film work, Nicholson has gained recognition outside traditional cinema. His appearance on the cover of Lana Del Rey‘s album Norman Fucking Rockwell! brought him further into the public eye. Although he occasionally models, he prefers spending his free time watching classic films, attending screenings, and immersing himself in the cinematic world.
As The Deputy prepares for its release, Duke Nicholson stands ready to prove that he is more than just the grandson of a Hollywood legend. With a clear vision and an authentic passion for storytelling, he is poised to make a significant mark in the film industry.
