American Airlines has introduced a new direct flight route to Bimini, Bahamas, marking the airline’s first-ever nonstop service connecting the United States to this Caribbean destination. The flights will operate three times weekly from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Bimini Airport (BIM), utilizing Embraer E175 jets operated by the airline’s regional subsidiary, American Eagle.
March 15, 2024, was a significant date for American Airlines as it expanded its route network to include Bimini, increasing its total destinations in the Bahamas from six to seven. This move underscores the airline’s commitment to the Caribbean market, particularly the growing demand for travel to this picturesque island.
The new service will follow a schedule that includes departures from Miami on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:14 AM. The flight is expected to take less than an hour, with an estimated arrival time in Bimini at 11:06 AM. The return flight from Bimini departs at 11:46 AM, arriving back in Miami at 12:34 PM.
Details of the New Route
The direct flight to Bimini is one of the shortest in American Airlines’ network, covering a distance of just 64 miles. Despite the scheduled block time of under an hour, actual flight times have historically averaged around 30 minutes. This makes Bimini the closest destination served by American Airlines in the Bahamas, with George Town being the farthest at just under an hour.
José María Giraldo, Managing Director of Operations for the region, highlighted the strategic importance of this new route, stating, “With the addition of our seventh destination in the Bahamas, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to the market.” The airline currently operates flights to six other Bahamian destinations, including Nassau, Freeport, Marsh Harbour, North Eleuthera, George Town, and Governor’s Harbour.
Miami: A Key Hub for Caribbean Travel
Miami serves as the primary hub for American Airlines’ operations in the Caribbean, facilitating travel to all seven of its Bahamian destinations. The service frequency from Miami to these destinations is substantial, with the following weekly flight counts, according to data sourced from FlightRadar24:
– Nassau (NAS): 36 flights weekly
– Freeport (FPO): 14 flights weekly
– Marsh Harbour (MHH): 21 flights weekly
– North Eleuthera (ELH): 21 flights weekly
– George Town (GGT): 28 flights weekly
– Governor’s Harbour (GHB): 8 flights weekly
While the airline anticipates adding capacity to the Bimini route in the future, it will first monitor passenger demand and route performance at the current thrice-weekly frequency.
The Embraer E175 jets utilized for this service are configured to accommodate up to 76 passengers, with 12 seats in First Class and 64 in Economy. Among the Economy seats, 20 offer extra legroom, enhancing passenger comfort. These aircraft are currently undergoing upgrades to improve the onboard experience.
As American Airlines moves forward with this new route, the airline’s focus on enhancing connectivity to the Bahamas reflects its commitment to providing convenient travel options to popular Caribbean destinations.
