UPDATE: The New York Yankees have just released right-hander Marcus Stroman, marking a dramatic conclusion to his disappointing stint with the team. This decision comes just ahead of Luis Gil‘s expected return from the injured list, set to make his season debut on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.
Stroman, who was signed to a $37 million contract before last season, will have his remaining $18 million salary absorbed by the Yankees. With only 39 innings pitched as of August 1 and a 6.23 ERA over nine starts this season, he fell short of the 140 innings needed for his $18 million option for 2026 to vest. Consequently, he will enter free agency this offseason.
The Yankees’ rotation now features Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, Gil, Will Warren, and rookie Cam Schlittler, who has impressed decision-makers enough to oust Stroman from the lineup. The addition of three new relievers at the trade deadline also eliminated the possibility of moving Stroman to the bullpen, especially since he dismissed the idea of being a reliever during spring training.
Stroman’s performance had already been under scrutiny, and injuries to both Gerrit Cole and Gil earlier in the season had temporarily opened opportunities for him to start. However, after spending over two months on the injured list due to a left knee issue, he returned on June 29 but struggled to regain form. His final appearance in a Yankees uniform was on Thursday, where he allowed four runs on six hits over five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays.
As the Yankees shift their focus towards a potential postseason push, all eyes will be on Gil’s performance and how the revamped rotation will fare against upcoming opponents. This significant roster change highlights the urgency for the Yankees to adapt quickly in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball as the season progresses.
