New reports confirm that New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone still considers Anthony Volpe the team’s primary shortstop, despite Volpe’s recent struggles at the plate. Volpe was absent from the starting lineup for the second consecutive game against the Washington Nationals on August 28, 2023, marking a challenging period for the 24-year-old player who is currently enduring a frigid offensive stretch.
Boone stated, “I plan on having him back in there [Tuesday] and probably in there in some way, shape or form tonight.” He emphasized the decision to rest Volpe as a necessary “reset,” aiming to alleviate the pressure as the Yankees head into the final stretch of the season. This decision comes as Volpe has faced significant challenges, going just 1-for-28 with 11 strikeouts in his last 29 plate appearances.
This season has been turbulent for Volpe, who entered the year as a promising first-round pick. His performance over August has been particularly alarming, with a batting average of just .121 since August 1. Overall, Volpe is batting .208 with 18 home runs and a .675 OPS in 509 plate appearances, ranking 144th among major league hitters this season.
The Yankees have turned to Jose Caballero, acquired at the trade deadline, to fill in during Volpe’s absence. Boone noted Caballero’s versatility will be crucial as the Yankees navigate the remaining games. Boone remarked, “Having Caballero here now makes those things a little easier when you’re going through it a little bit.”
Volpe’s defensive performance has also raised concerns. After being a Gold Glove finalist last season, he currently holds a troubling -7 Outs Above Average, ranking 21st among 24 qualified shortstops. Fans have expressed frustration, evident from the boos directed at Volpe during home games. However, Boone believes Volpe is handling the pressure well and remains committed to improving.
“He’s mentally very tough and totally wired to handle all of the things that go with being a big leaguer in this city,” Boone stated.
As the Yankees face off against the Nationals, all eyes will be on Volpe’s return and whether he can regain his form. The urgency for improvement is palpable as the Yankees aim to solidify their playoff chances in the coming weeks. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if this “reset” can spark a turnaround for Volpe, whose potential remains a key asset for the team.
