URGENT UPDATE: New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is battling through a small tear in the labrum of his left shoulder, but manager Aaron Boone confirms that Volpe is expected to continue playing. This announcement comes after Volpe received a cortisone shot on Wednesday, following another injection post-All-Star break.
Developments unfolded quickly as Volpe re-aggravated the injury during Sunday’s game, leading to him sitting out on Wednesday for the second time in just a week. Boone stated that Volpe is currently in “day-to-day mode,” but he does not anticipate the player will require a stint on the injured list.
“I don’t think it’s been a major factor in his performance or his ability to swing the bat,” Boone remarked on Thursday, providing reassurance to fans.
Since the injury was first discovered in May, Volpe has managed to hit 19 home runs and drive in 70 RBIs this season. However, his batting average has plummeted to just .206 with a .268 on-base percentage, along with a staggering 140 strikeouts in 141 games. His 81 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus) ranks him 141st out of 146 qualified hitters this season, reflecting a significant struggle at the plate.
Worsening matters, since June 25, Volpe’s performance has dipped further, boasting a mere .171 batting average and a .573 OPS over the last 63 games. During his absences, Jose Caballero has stepped in to fill the shortstop role.
As the Yankees eye the postseason, fans are hopeful Volpe can push through the discomfort. Boone indicated that an MRI is likely to occur after the season, but for now, the focus remains on Volpe’s immediate contributions as the team navigates the final stretch of the season.
