Wizards of the Coast Reveals Why Raph’s Weapon Changed in TMNT Set

BREAKING: Wizards of the Coast has just revealed a significant change in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover set for Magic: The Gathering, set to release on March 6, 2024. Fans noticed that Raphael’s iconic weapon, the sai, has been replaced with a jitte, sparking confusion and curiosity among the community.

In an urgent blog post released today, Wizards explained that the decision was intentional, aimed at providing a fresh take on the beloved characters. Raphael is depicted wielding a jitte—a traditional blunt weapon from feudal Japan—with a single hooked tine, diverging from his established weaponry.

This artistic choice reflects Wizards’ desire to create a unique version of the Ninja Turtles, distinct from previous iterations. As stated in their blog, this new TMNT version has its own designs and narratives, allowing for creative freedom in weapon selection.

Wizards emphasized that the jitte aligns with the heritage of Splinter, Raphael’s father figure. The blog describes this choice as a reflection of Raphael’s respect for Splinter, despite their turbulent relationship, highlighting the emotional depth behind the design.

Fans have expressed mixed reactions, with some appreciating the thoughtful reasoning while others miss the classic sai. The blog acknowledges the humorous juxtaposition of using old comic art featuring Raph with sai for cards showcasing his new weapon.

This change is poised to impact how players interact with the game, as it introduces new dynamics and themes to the TMNT set. As anticipation builds towards the release, players and collectors are encouraged to explore the full depth of this unique crossover.

Stay tuned for more updates as Wizards of the Coast prepares to launch this exciting addition to the Magic universe. Share your thoughts on Raphael’s new weapon and what it means for the Turtle legacy!
