UPDATE: In a dramatic season opener, senior Antonio Higgins of West Aurora showcased his talent by switching from defensive back to wide receiver. Despite the team suffering a heavy 56-7 defeat to Hinsdale Central on August 29, 2025, Higgins’ performance stood out as a beacon of hope for the Blackhawks.
Higgins, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 171 pounds, caught three passes for an impressive 112 yards, demonstrating his determination to lead his team this season. “As a senior, I felt I should take responsibility and help lead my team,” he stated. His efforts included a thrilling 75-yard catch-and-run that nearly resulted in a touchdown, but he was ruled out of bounds.
The game was a tough start for West Aurora, who finished last season with a record of 10-1. Coach Nate Eimer expressed disappointment but remained optimistic. “We need to look at this tape and make a lot of changes,” he said. “We will be a lot better next week.”
The Blackhawks faced challenges throughout the match, struggling to gain momentum. Junior offensive lineman Joshua Nolan was injured early on and transported to a local hospital, adding to the team’s difficulties. Quarterback Mason Atkins, who is committed to Ball State, completed 11 of 30 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown.
Hinsdale Central’s senior quarterback, Riley Contreras, dominated the field with 242 passing yards and four touchdowns, along with 78 rushing yards. “They controlled the line of scrimmage,” Eimer noted, highlighting the disparity in performance.
Despite the loss, the Blackhawks are looking forward to their next challenge against Glenbard East (1-0) in Week 2. “We have to move on,” Eimer said. “The only way to go is up.”
Higgins’ adaptation to his new role and his ability to make significant plays could be pivotal as West Aurora aims to bounce back and reclaim their competitive edge this season. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful that the team will learn from this defeat and build on Higgins’ promising performance moving forward.
