URGENT UPDATE: Today marks the 39th anniversary of a monumental achievement in Chicago sports history as Walter Payton, the legendary Chicago Bears running back, became the NFL’s all-time leading rusher on October 7, 1984. Payton surpassed the previous record held by Jim Brown at Soldier Field, solidifying his legacy in the world of football.
In a thrilling game against the New Orleans Saints, Payton rushed for a pivotal 6 yards, bringing his career total to 12,400 yards. With just 20 seconds left in the game, Bears coach Mike Ditka pulled Payton from the field to celebrate this historic moment. Ditka stated, “When God said he would make the best football player who ever lived, he probably said two men: Jim Thorpe and Walter Payton.”
Payton’s record of 16,726 yards stood for an impressive 18 years before being eclipsed by Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys. This record-breaking moment not only marked a significant milestone for Payton but also for the Chicago Bears and their loyal fans.
In addition to this unforgettable football moment, October 7 is a notable date in Chicago sports history. The Chicago Cubs faced a heartbreaking loss in the National League Championship Series against the San Diego Padres in 1984, marking a pivotal moment for the team.
Further reflecting on the city’s rich history, the Harold Washington Library Center opened its doors to the public in 1991, welcoming an estimated 10,000 visitors on its inaugural day.
Fast forward to 2005, the Chicago White Sox achieved a remarkable feat by sweeping the defending champion Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series, setting the stage for their World Series win just weeks later.
However, the day is also remembered for its challenges. In 2007, the Chicago Marathon faced unprecedented heat, with temperatures soaring to a record-breaking 89 degrees. The race was cut short for the first time in its history due to heat-related illnesses, tragically resulting in one fatality among the participants.
As we commemorate these significant events today, Chicagoans are encouraged to reflect on the indelible impact of Walter Payton and the various milestones that have shaped the city’s sports landscape.
