UPDATE: The No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores have made history, matching their best start in program history at 16-0 after defeating the LSU Tigers 84-73 on January 13, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee. This victory ties the Commodores with the 2007-08 team for the best unbeaten start in the school’s 124-year basketball history.
Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner led the charge with 20 points, showcasing a powerful performance that helped the team stay undefeated in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at 3-0. The Commodores entered this matchup as one of only six unbeaten teams in the nation, a testament to their impressive form.
The game started with both teams exchanging early points, but it was Vanderbilt’s AK Okereke who shifted the momentum with a crafty layup, establishing a lead that they would not relinquish. Tanner followed with a three-point play, pushing Vanderbilt’s advantage to a substantial 20 points at one stage. They ended the first half with a commanding score of 52-38, shooting an impressive 57.6% from the field.
LSU, missing their leading scorer Dedan Thomas Jr. due to a lower leg injury, struggled to gain traction throughout the game. Max Mackinnon led the Tigers with a season-high 27 points, but their efforts fell short as they suffered their third consecutive SEC loss.
As the second half began, Vanderbilt faced a sluggish start, hitting only 2 of 12 attempts. LSU seized the opportunity, launching a 12-1 run that narrowed the gap to 59-52 with just over 12 minutes left. Despite LSU’s determination, Tanner’s timely jump shot and subsequent free throws kept Vanderbilt securely in the lead.
In the final minute, LSU attempted a last-ditch effort to close the deficit, but Vanderbilt sealed their victory by making all four of their free throws.
Looking ahead, LSU will host the Kentucky Wildcats on January 17, while Vanderbilt prepares for a challenging away game against the Texas Longhorns on the same night. With their historic run continuing, all eyes will be on the Commodores as they aim to remain undefeated.
This victory not only highlights Vanderbilt’s prowess on the court but also sets the stage for an exhilarating season ahead. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how far this remarkable team can go.
