Urgent Warning: Deadly 18-Foot Sneaker Waves Hit NorCal Coast

URGENT UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a critical warning for Northern California as deadly “sneaker waves” are expected to surge to heights of 13 to 18 feet along the coast until at least 10 p.m. Sunday. Beachgoers are urged to stay away from the shoreline amid this dangerous weather development.

Sneaker waves can strike unexpectedly, catching individuals off guard during otherwise calm conditions. These waves occur when offshore swells and coastal winds converge, creating a formidable force that can travel significantly farther up the beach than typical waves. Areas at higher risk include Ocean Beach, parts of Santa Cruz County, and Pacifica. Officials strongly advise against surfing, tidepooling, or any beach activities.

In addition to the sneaker waves, the water temperature off the San Francisco coast is a chilling 57 degrees Fahrenheit. This frigid temperature poses severe risks, as individuals can lose dexterity within 15 minutes and face life-threatening conditions within just a few hours, according to experts from the University of Sea Kayaking.

Authorities stress the importance of heeding this warning to avoid tragic accidents. The combination of sneaker waves and potential rip currents, especially around piers, jetties, and inlets, elevates the danger for unsuspecting beachgoers.

As the situation develops, residents and visitors are advised to monitor local weather updates and heed any further warnings. Stay safe and share this urgent news with others to prevent potential tragedies along the Northern California coast.
