Urgent Update: Missing Middlebury College Student Dies by Suicide

UPDATE: A tragic development has emerged in the case of missing Middlebury College student Lia Smith, who was reported missing on October 19. Authorities have confirmed that the 21-year-old transgender student died by suicide, as revealed by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.

The body of Smith was discovered on October 26 during a search in a field west of Middlebury in Cornwall, near the college’s organic farm, The Knoll. Vermont State Police made this announcement late Friday, stating that the autopsy confirmed suicide as the cause of death.

Authorities had been actively searching for Smith since she was reported missing two days earlier, prompting extensive efforts by local police, K-9 units, and drone surveillance. The college community—home to approximately 2,800 undergraduates—was notified promptly, with students receiving updates about her disappearance on October 22.

In a heartfelt statement, Middlebury College President Ian Baucom expressed the deep sadness felt across campus. “This is incredibly saddening news, and we are working to support our community in every way we can at this difficult time,” he said. He urged students to care for themselves and one another as the community grapples with this devastating loss.

Counseling services were made available to students starting Monday, ensuring support during this challenging period. Earlier this week, college officials emphasized their commitment to finding Smith, highlighting her as a beloved member of the Middlebury family.

Smith, a double major in statistics and computer science, had previously competed on the women’s swimming and diving team and was active in campus organizations such as the chess club and Queers & Allies. Just months before her disappearance, she participated in a panel at Middlebury discussing the politicization of transgender health care, where she highlighted the strong support network for transgender students on campus.

The impact of her disappearance was profoundly felt among her peers. Senior Lucy Schembre remarked, “We’re a really small community. Even if you don’t know someone personally, you definitely know somebody who knows them.”

This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the broader issues facing transgender individuals. A 2023 study revealed that 42 percent of transgender adults in the U.S. have attempted suicide, with 81 percent having contemplated it—statistics that emphasize the urgent need for support and understanding within the community.

As the Middlebury community mourns the loss of Lia Smith, the focus shifts to ongoing support for students and the vital conversations around mental health and inclusivity. The college remains dedicated to creating an environment where all students feel safe and valued, especially in light of this tragedy.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Smith’s disappearance and death continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. Students and community members are encouraged to share their feelings and seek support as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
