UPDATE: Enforcement of the new Boca Grande Parking ordinance officially begins this weekend, confirmed by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. An electronic signboard will be installed on Thursday at the county line to alert residents and visitors that the new parking laws are now in effect.
According to Todd Olmer, public affairs captain for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies will monitor compliance closely. “When deputies observe violations, they will continue to use discretion and will issue warnings or citations on a case-by-case basis,” Olmer stated. This approach underscores the community’s role in ensuring understanding and adherence to the new regulations.
The updated parking restrictions include mandatory parking passes for residents and island workers. Hotels and rental units will distribute paper passes, while homeowners can request guest passes for visitors needing street parking. Importantly, there is now a three-hour parking limit in town for those without a pass, particularly affecting areas like 5th Street. However, during events of “limited duration” on the island, parking passes will not be required. Additionally, churches on Gilchrist will be allowed to park in the median on Sundays from 3rd to 5th.
As part of the transition to these new regulations, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled multiple dates for residents to pick up parking permits. These sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Crowninshield Community House on the following dates: February 2, February 4, February 9, February 11, February 12, February 16, February 18, February 19, February 23, February 25, and February 26.
The enforcement of this ordinance is vital to maintaining order and accessibility on the island, ensuring that both residents and visitors can enjoy Boca Grande responsibly. As the weekend approaches, it is crucial for everyone to be aware of these changes and prepare accordingly to avoid potential citations.
Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the cooperation of the Boca Grande community in spreading the word about these important changes.
