UPDATE: Roan Mountain State Park is launching a vital fundraising campaign this September to support its wildlife education programs. From September 1-30, visitors can contribute to the care of various native animals, including three birds of prey and several snakes, by donating as little as $10, which feeds one bird for a day.
This initiative is critical as the cost of food and health care for these animals is substantial. The park, operating under a permit from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, relies on community support to sustain its educational programs that provide invaluable insights into local wildlife. All contributions will directly fund essential needs like food, veterinary bills, and habitat improvements.
Don’t miss out! Participate in exciting events throughout the month. On September 13, join the “Salamanders of Appalachia Night Hike” from 9:00-10:30 PM EST for just $10. Led by Ranger Phil Hylen, this hike offers a unique opportunity to explore the salamander capital of the world. Participants will embark on a 1-mile trek along the Peg Leg Mine Loop trail, discovering diverse salamander species and learning observation techniques. With only 15 spots available, early registration is encouraged.
On September 21, from 2:00-4:00 PM EST, the park will host the “Peg Leg Mine GeoVenture,” another engaging event priced at $10. Step back in time to the late 1800s and take on the role of iron miners while hiking a 1.2-mile moderate trail to explore the historic Peg Leg Mine. Participants will have the chance to crack open geodes and iron ore to keep as souvenirs. This program is limited to 20 participants, making it essential to secure your spot promptly.
Roan Mountain State Park emphasizes the importance of appropriate gear for these outdoor activities. Attendees are advised to wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring water, and pack snacks, especially as September weather can be unpredictable.
This month presents a unique chance to connect with nature, learn about wildlife conservation, and contribute to a worthy cause. Your support will not only help sustain the park’s educational efforts but also ensure the well-being of its nonreleasable animal ambassadors.
Join the effort to enrich wildlife education at Roan Mountain State Park. Act now to make a difference in the lives of these animals and enjoy unforgettable outdoor experiences. Share this urgent news with friends and family to spread the word!
