UPDATE: The search for 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard has taken a dramatic turn, with authorities revealing shocking new details that include a 1,000-mile drive and disguises. Just three days after leaving California with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, Melodee has not been seen since October 9, and investigators are racing against time to uncover her whereabouts.
The investigation began after school officials reported Melodee’s prolonged absence on October 14. Concerned about her well-being, they contacted local authorities when she failed to participate in her remote study program. Detectives quickly discovered that the last confirmed sighting of Melodee was in Lompoc back in August, prior to her disappearance.
In a shocking twist, Ashlee Buzzard, 40, was arrested on October 13 on charges of false imprisonment, although authorities state this incident is not directly linked to her daughter’s case. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Buzzard has remained uncooperative, providing “no verifiable explanation” for Melodee’s disappearance.
Detectives believe Melodee may have vanished during a whirlwind trip across multiple states between October 7-10. During this time, Ashlee reportedly drove as far as Nebraska, crossing at least six states while frequently changing disguises, including wigs. Surveillance footage from a rental car agency shows Ashlee and Melodee wearing wigs, which investigators suspect were used to conceal their identities.
Melodee’s grandmother, Lilly Denes, expressed her agony upon seeing the surveillance images. “If she’s listening, we love you. We’re here for you, and we just want you to be happy,” she said, urging Melodee to reach out.
Authorities are appealing to the public for help, asking anyone who might have seen the pair or has information on Melodee’s whereabouts to contact them immediately. A travel-route map has been released, urging businesses and residents along the route to check surveillance footage for any sign of Melodee.
As the investigation continues, officials are focusing their efforts on locating Melodee and ensuring her safety. The community remains on high alert as they await further updates on this urgent situation.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office or submit an anonymous tip. The emotional weight of this case hangs heavy, and time is of the essence as the search for Melodee Buzzard intensifies.
