Urgent Rescue Underway for Missing Skiers After Avalanche in Sierra Nevada

UPDATE: A critical rescue operation is currently underway for missing skiers following a devastating avalanche in the Sierra Nevada’s Castle Peak area. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident just after 11:30 a.m. today, as authorities rush to locate several members of a backcountry skiing party who remain unaccounted for.

Authorities are mobilizing extensive resources, including the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue team and allied agencies, in their urgent response to this life-threatening situation. The sheriff’s office has not yet disclosed the total number of missing individuals, intensifying concern among families and friends awaiting news.

This incident comes on the heels of a tragic avalanche in January that claimed the life of a snowmobiler near Johnson Peak and Castle Peak in Truckee. In that earlier case, the individual was initially reported missing but was later found beneath the snow, tragically unable to be revived despite immediate lifesaving efforts.

As rescue operations progress, officials emphasize the dangers of backcountry skiing, especially in avalanche-prone areas. The community is rallying around the missing skiers, hoping for their swift and safe recovery.

This story is developing rapidly. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office will provide further details as the rescue continues.
