UPDATE: A critical emergency pledge drive for PBS Kansas, KPTS Channel 8, kicks off at 8 a.m. on July 12, 2023, and runs until 8 a.m. on July 13, 2023, in response to significant budget cuts that threaten the station’s future. This urgent action is a direct result of a recent federal funding withdrawal ordered by President Donald Trump and supported by Kansas Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, alongside Congressman Ron Estes.

The station’s funding has been slashed by approximately 25% of its $4 million budget, leaving independent media advocates alarmed. The cuts come on the heels of a budget recission bill demanded by Trump, raising concerns about the future of free media in America.

With a programming lineup that includes vital educational content and news documentaries, KPTS has been a cornerstone for many in Wichita and beyond. The loss of funding is seen as a dangerous precedent, silencing dissenting voices and undermining the role of public broadcasting in a democracy.

The situation mirrors a troubling trend in U.S. media, where the independence of journalism is increasingly at risk. The emergency pledge drive aims to rally community support to ensure KPTS remains a platform for cultural education and unbiased information.

Reflecting on the past, many recall the lessons from media history, including the Watergate scandal, which demonstrated the power of journalism to hold government accountable. The current media landscape is starkly different, with significant pressure from political leaders to conform to specific narratives.

As part of the drive, the public is encouraged to join the effort by tuning in to KPTS Channel 8 and making donations during the live broadcast. Journalism professionals and community members alike will participate in the drive, emphasizing the importance of independent media for the future of democracy.

The stakes have never been higher. The fight for PBS Kansas is not just about funding; it’s about preserving the values of free expression and the critical role of media in society. Don’t miss the chance to contribute to this vital cause. Tune in and support PBS Kansas during this crucial 24-hour event.

Join the conversation and help make a difference—your support matters now more than ever.
