UPDATE: Norristown is set to launch its Hometown Heroes banner program, honoring local servicemembers with banners displayed prominently along the town’s main streets starting in 2026. This initiative aims to celebrate the sacrifices of veterans like Army Spc. Walter Bartasch, a local hero who was killed in action in Vietnam.
The program, unveiled just ahead of Veterans Day, will feature 160 banners showcasing photos of local veterans, along with their branch and era of service. Banners will be hung from May to Veterans Day each year, bringing the community together to recognize its heroes. Each banner costs $135 and will be given to the sponsor after its two-year display period.
Norristown’s streets—specifically Main Street (Markley to Arch), DeKalb Street (Lafayette to Fornance), Markley Street (Coolidge to Main), and West Marshall Street (Markley to Haws)—were chosen to connect each banner with locations meaningful to the veterans.
Residents are invited to share their own stories as part of this initiative. The growing program was inspired by a similar project in Lansdale, led by Anne Henning Scheuring, who has successfully established over 500 banners in her community since its inception in 2016.
“This Veterans Day, let’s tell more stories through the prism of Norristown Hometown Heroes,”
said Kevin Tustin, Public Information Officer for Norristown.
Norristown’s rich history of military service is reflected in the many namesakes throughout the town, including Winfield Scott Hancock and John F. Hartranft, both honored for their extraordinary contributions. As Norristown continues to honor its legacy, this banner program will ensure that the stories of its heroes are told and remembered.
With almost 200 years of history since Norristown’s incorporation in 1812, the urgency to celebrate local heroes has never been more critical. The municipality is not managing the program directly, allowing for community involvement and engagement. Those interested can find more information about the Hometown Heroes program at norristown.org/683/Hometown-Heroes or visit Norristown Municipal Hall at 235 E. Airy St.
As the program gears up, Norristown is poised to not just honor its past but actively involve the community in remembering and celebrating its veterans. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to share and showcase the stories of those who served!
