UPDATE: Demolition work has just begun at North Devon District Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s expansion efforts. The project, funded by an impressive £22.7 million from the Government’s New Hospital Programme, aims to replace outdated staff accommodations with state-of-the-art residences.
The demolition of the two old staff buildings will pave the way for 120 ensuite bedrooms, including four fully accessible family apartments and six individual accessible ensuite rooms. These modern facilities will feature shared kitchen, living, and dining spaces, along with various amenities designed to support NHS staff and students at the Barnstaple site.
Developing: This renovation is a critical part of the Our Future Hospital Programme, as emphasized by North Devon MP Ian Roome, who visited the site on November 21, 2023. Roome stated, “The demolition of the old residences at North Devon District Hospital is a really important first step for the Our Future Hospital programme. It frees up the land we need for the next phases.”
The urgency of this project cannot be overstated. While the new accommodations represent a vital investment in healthcare infrastructure, the hospital still faces pressing needs after being denied earlier funding for a full rebuild, which has been postponed to 2035 by the current government. Roome expressed his determination to maintain pressure for further investments, including upgrades to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), modern operating theaters, and a new MRI suite.
Officials from Royal Devon confirm that the redevelopment is essential for attracting and retaining healthcare professionals in the region. Chris Tidman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, remarked, “This is an important step in the Our Future Hospital (OFH) Programme and marks a significant investment in the future of North Devon District Hospital.”
As the demolition progresses, some temporary disruptions are expected. Parking restrictions have been implemented to accommodate construction vehicles, leading to complaints from visitors struggling to find parking. The trust aims to limit these disruptions to non-peak outpatient hours whenever possible.
The project reflects a broader commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities in North Devon, but it also underscores the ongoing challenges the hospital faces in securing necessary funding for further improvements. Community support and advocacy remain crucial as stakeholders strive for a healthcare system that meets the growing needs of the region.
